Paul McCartney urges Indian Prime Minister to declare National Vegetarian Day

In addition to being the most commercially successful musician in history and a knight, Paul McCartney is passionate about being a vegetarian. Now, he’s urging India to declare a national Vegetarian Day.

Last week, McCartney sent a letter to Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh urging him to declare the Vegetarian Day as “a celebration of life” that would both promote compassion toward animals and a meat-free living.

Ironically, though McCartney’s intentions are honorable, India is probably the least deserving country of this type of encouragement. A 2003 estimation by the United Nations Food Agency estimated that 42 percent of India’s population are vegetarian, either due to their religious beliefs of financial concerns.

McCartney receives 2010 Kennedy Center Honor

Paul McCartney stood among good company, including President Obama, as one of several 2010 Kennedy Center honorees celebrated last night in Washington, DC. He–along with Oprah Winfrey, Merle Haggard, Broadway producer Jerry Herman and dancer Bill T. Jones– were saluted for their lifetimes of contributions that helped define television, dance, theater and music.

Actor Alec Baldwin introduced McCartney’s award in true comedic fashion, joking, “The National Institutes of Health called the epidemic Beatlemania. There was no cure.” And some of music’s brightest stars paid musical tribute with a variety of Beatles medleys: No Doubt opened with “Hello, Goodbye”; Steven Tyler of Aerosmith performed an “Abbey Road” medley - something the Beatles themselves never did live; and James Taylor sang a duet with Mavis Staples of “Let It Be” and “Hey Jude.”

McCartney received the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song from the Library of Congress earlier this year. “You know, great things just come in bundles,” he said.

Beatle’s birthday bash brings out McCartney

McCartney joined fellow Beatle, and birthday boy, Ringo Starr, onstage during Starr’s birthday concert last week at Radio City Music Hall. Starr was celebrating his 70th birthday with a little help from many of his famous friends including Yoko Ono, Max Weinberg, Steve Van Zandt and Angus Young, and while backed by the latest version of his All Starr Band.

The concert party involved more than two hours of Beatles tunes, covers, and even a solo hit or two. At the very end of the night, nearly bringing the house down, Ringo was joined on the stage by a spry Paul, according to Rollingstone.com.

Appropriately enough the duo performed “Birthday” off the White Album with McCartney singing the lead and Starr, naturally, on drums. The crowd understandably went wild, and at the end of the song, the two longtime friends embraced and walked off stage together to a standing ovation. What an epic moment!

For more moments of epic proportion, get Paul McCartney tickets from a ticket broker with reasonably priced seats. McCartney is touring all summer long hitting mainly stadiums, and with GreatSeats.com, who specializes in sports tickets and other concert tickets such as Bob Dylan and BB King, you’ll have the chance to make some memories of your own. And maybe Ringo will return the favor!

Paul McCartney Plays the White House

On June 2nd, Sir Paul will be receiving the “Gershwin Prize” in a presentation at the White House by President Obama. McCartney will be following in the famous footsteps of other recipients, including Stevie Wonder (2008) and Paul Simon (2007).

The Gershwin Prize was created by the Library of Congress in honor of the composer brothers, Ira and George Gershwin. There will be an award presentation and a concert featuring some of music’s biggest stars: Elvis Costello, the Jonas Brothers, Emmylou Harris, Dave Grohl of the Foofighters, and many more.

Paul McCartney’s expanding his arena tour

Paul McCartney has expanded his “Up and Coming” tour for 2010, which kicks off later this month.

The former Beatle will start things off with a two-night stint in Glendale, AZ, March 28-29, making his first stop in the state in five years. McCartney has promised an expansive schedule, though only a few dates have been released thus far. Rumors have swirled that he’s going play Chicago’s Wrigley Field over the summer, but nothing has been confirmed. It will jive with the tour thus far, which is scheduled for arenas and other large venues.

As McCartney has in the past, he will perform songs from his entire catalogue on tour, including Beatles hits. There are Paul McCartney tickets for sale now, and you know they won’t stay that way for long.
